The event is performed in Turkish. It is not suitable for audiences who do not speak Turkish.
In their restless quest to understand the world and humanity, two dreamers sharing the same dream in different ways…
Two great writers aboard a ferry cutting through the darkness of the night…
Turkish literature’s two towering figures, Sait Faik Abasıyanık and Orhan Kemal, meet on a magical night that stretches from the gardens of Marmara Clinic to the streets of Burgazada. Düş Payı is a fairytale-like, bittersweet and festive nocturnal journey, bearing witness to two master writers being swept away by a dream that moves between reality and fiction, theater and cinema, past and present.
“I feel the fear that fills the heart of the John Dory fish within me. The fear of death…”
One night, while Sait Faik is undergoing treatment at Marmara Clinic, someone knocks on his door. It is Orhan Kemal. In his hands is the draft of a new film he has embraced with great hope after writing countless screenplays. The screenplay, whose main characters are drawn from Orhan Kemal’s fictional world and whose supporting characters come from Sait Faik’s stories, needs only one thing to become reality: Sait’s signature. But Sait Faik has a different condition. First, they must escape from the hospital together!
“In the fading light of evening, aboard the Burgazada ferry, Mr. Sait’s cirrhosis is acting up, but we’re headed for Aleksandra.”
As the two friends venture into the Istanbul night and set off toward Burgazada, reality and fiction begin to blur. Sait Faik’s island meets the people of Orhan Kemal’s world. Along the way, the two great writers sometimes share the same dream, sometimes turn against each other in anger, and sometimes mercilessly criticize one another’s worlds. Because their friendship is far from perfect; it is real. Their relationship is marked by laughter as much as arguments, and solidarity as much as hurt feelings.
“What kind of world? A world without injustice!”
Meanwhile, the love between Semih and Işık, who are trying to escape the lives they have left behind, finds its way into this strange, magical night, where it is tested by courage, fear, conscience and freedom.
“Everything begins with loving someone. But here, everything ends with loving someone.”
Bringing literature and cinema, reality and fiction, past and present together on the same stage, Düş Payı tells a story that goes far beyond the lives of two great writers:
It tells the story of people trying to understand one another. Of those who refuse to give up on love. Of those who pursue freedom. And of those who dream of a better world. Because beneath all these stories lies the same question:
“Should humanity change, or should the world?”
The corridors of literary history that Tiyatro Hayali first began exploring with its play Meçhul Paşa now open onto an imagined encounter between Sait Faik and Orhan Kemal. Welcoming its audience with mischievous humor, Düş Payı invites us into the very heart of the dreams that literature, cinema and humanity build with hope. You are invited to witness the warm “dream” that falls to each of us as our share of the great legacy left behind by these two masters, woven through their love for their homeland and the rhythmic clatter of their typewriters.
“I fear no one, and this is my bitter chocolate!”
