Martin McDonagh’s A Behanding in Spokane follows Carmichael as he spends several hours in a hotel room searching for his left hand, which has been missing for years. Having lost his hand in childhood, Carmichael has spent decades travelling across America in search of it. One day, two young con artists, Toby and Marilyn, claim to have the hand he is looking for in an attempt to swindle him out of money. What begins as a minor scam soon spirals out of control. When Mervyn, the hotel receptionist, gets caught up in the events, four seemingly very different characters find themselves trapped in the same room. As the story unfolds around the missing hand, their loneliness, fears, lies and pasts gradually come to light.

Using absurd situations and dark humour, McDonagh exposes the difficulties people face in connecting with one another, their search for belonging and their sense of incompleteness.

On the surface, A Behanding in Spokane may seem like a story about a con, but at its core, it questions how far we should go in pursuit of what we have lost. The play explores far more than the physical absence of a limb, examining how people carry the missing pieces of their lives, how these absences shape their identities, and whether what we seek is truly what we have lost. Masterfully blending dark comedy with tragedy, the play stands among McDonagh’s most absurd yet deeply human works.

A young man stands on stage, talking to us about a particular passion of his: sounds.

He addresses us directly, as if giving a presentation.

The long table at the center of the stage resembles a technical control station, covered with various tools, devices, objects, photographs and recordings.

He tells us about the impact sounds have on him, tracing his fascination with them back to his childhood and sharing how his interest has evolved over the years.

At first, what he tells us feels deeply personal.

But as the story unfolds, we begin to realize just how significant a place sounds hold in our collective memory.

Alongside him, we hear the sounds he describes. Not only with our ears, but also through our memories, emotions and intuition.

We almost “remember” sounds we have never heard before.

Sounds of the present, sounds from our childhood, sounds that existed centuries ago. They merge, diverge, collide and transform, taking us on a journey together.

The young man sets out to follow the sounds of the city he lives in, and we follow him.

His personal history becomes a shared history.

Through what we hear, we confront what we have forgotten, become aware of what we have taken for granted, and listen to the things we have passed by without a second thought.

We get to know a city all over again.
