Written and performed by Ecem Erkek, Kara Kız is a one-woman musical play about a girl growing up in a traditional family in the 1990s. Not the princesses dressed in pink, wearing puffy skirts and carried on their fathers’ shoulders throughout every adventure, but the girl wearing a wool dress bought at the local market, tights and knitted slippers, dancing to Mezdeke at her mother’s ladies’ day gathering. The story of a “kara kız” who earns even the unconditional love given to children through the power of her wrists and a few well-timed shoulder shimmies… Sounds strangely familiar, doesn’t it?
One New Year’s Eve, when our heroine is left stood up by her boyfriend and fears she will spend the evening all alone, she stumbles upon a mixtape she made as a child. The tape takes her on a laughter-filled journey through her childhood and teenage years, where she washes carpets out on the street, straightens her hair with an iron and joins the traditional line dance at her cousin’s wedding.
On her way back, she hears a familiar voice she has always blamed for her lack of self-confidence… Her mother!
It’s a song she has never heard her mother sing before, but one they can finally sing together. There could be no better way to spend New Year’s Eve. So, here’s to us, Mom! Come on, let’s sing it together!
