SYML, the solo project of Seattle-based musician and producer Brian Fennell, reaches millions of listeners worldwide with his atmospheric, emotionally charged music, inspired by the instincts that draw us toward sanctuary, whether in a place or in a person.
Classically trained in piano from a young age, Fennell later taught himself production, programming, and guitar, developing the distinctive musical world that has become synonymous with SYML. Making a strong entrance into the music scene with his self-titled debut album in 2019, the artist reached a wide audience with multi-platinum hit “Where’s My Love” and Gold-certified “Girl.”
With more than five billion streams worldwide, SYML has built a strong and intimate connection with his listeners, while his music has also found a prominent place in film and television. His songs have been featured in productions such as Maxton Hall and The Summer I Turned Pretty, while one of his works was sampled by Lana Del Rey on “Paris, TX,” from her 2023 Grammy-nominated album Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.
One of the most personal chapters of SYML’s musical journey, The Day My Father Died, was recorded at Seattle’s Studio X with Grammy-winning producer Phil Ek. The album features collaborations with notable artists including Guy Garvey of Elbow, Lucius, Sara Watkins, and Charlotte Lawrence.
His third studio album, Nobody Lives Here, delves even deeper into themes of grief, loss, and mortality. Written, recorded, and produced by Brian Fennell alongside collaborator Brian Eichelberger, the album offers an intimate reflection on the contradictions of being alive: fleeting yet meaningful, fragile yet worth holding onto. The Seattle Times praised Fennell as an artist capable of creating “an instant-tears piano melody” while using minimalism to achieve profound emotional impact.
Following his sold-out Nobody Lives Here tour across North America, the UK, and Europe, SYML has further cemented his reputation as one of indie music’s most emotionally resonant live performers. Capturing the essence of this tour, Paris Unplugged, his upcoming live album, will be released on vinyl and CD on October 16.
