Singer and songwriter Jonah Yano has made waves in the music world with his unique blend of smooth, jazz-inflected soul-pop, infused with elements of hip-hop and electronica. His 2020 debut album, "Souvenir," showcased his exceptional artistry, but in 2023, he takes it even further with "Portrait of a Dog," a stunning new release produced in collaboration with the renowned BadBadNotGood. Born in Hiroshima and later relocating to Vancouver, Jonah's musical journey began at a young age when his grandmother introduced him to the piano. He soon expanded his repertoire to include the guitar and began crafting his own compositions. In 2016, he started recording demos on his phone, and after moving to Toronto, he immersed himself in the local music scene, perfecting his craft. His breakthrough came in 2018 when he featured on the indie pop-rap duo Moneyphone's track "On Lock." Shortly after, he released his debut solo single, "Rolex, the Ocean," which showcased his signature sound—a seamless fusion of smooth jazz, soulful pop, and hip-hop beats, all topped with Jonah's emotive vocals. In 2019, Jonah signed with Innovative Leisure, leading to the release of his debut EP, "Nervous," where he collaborated with labelmates BadBadNotGood and incorporated more electronic elements into his music. The following year marked the release of his highly personal debut full-length album, "Souvenir," which featured the heartwarming centerpiece, "Shoes." This song, originally written and recorded by Jonah's father, Tatsuya Muraoka, in the '90s, was completed by Jonah following their reconciliation in 2019. Now, in early 2023, Jonah Yano returns with "Portrait of a Dog," a record that's both a family archival project and a poignant breakup album. This latest release showcases his ever-evolving musical versatility, leaning more prominently into jazz and intricate instrumental passages.
