KARA KIZ

The event is performed in Turkish. It is not suitable for audiences who do not speak Turkish.

Ecem Erkek’s one-woman musical play “Kara Kız” tells the story of a girl growing up in a traditional family in the 1990s.

She is not one of those “princess-like” children dressed in pink with fluffy skirts, carried on her father’s shoulders everywhere. Instead, she is the girl wearing a wool dress bought from the local market, leggings underneath, slippers on her feet, dancing “Mezdeke” at her mother’s coffee gatherings. The story of the “black girl” who earns unconditional love not through appearance, but through her own strength, gestures, and personality. It feels strangely familiar…

One New Year’s Eve, after being stood up by her boyfriend and thinking she will be completely alone, the protagonist finds a mixtape she recorded in her childhood. This cassette takes her on a joyful journey back to her childhood and youth: washing carpets in the street, ironing her hair, dancing at her cousin’s wedding. On the way back, she hears a familiar voice she once blamed for her lack of confidence—her mother.

And this time, it is a song she has never heard her mother sing before. But perhaps it is finally a song they can sing together. Could there be a better New Year’s Eve than this?

Age limit: +16

Duration: 75 minutes / single act
