Zorlu PSM Jaz Festival: Esmerine
04 May 2017 - 21:00 - Turkcell Platinum Stage

Esmerine, the Canadian modern chamber music ensemble which produces in a variety of genres such as drone music, post-punk and Turkish folk, will be at Zorlu PSM on May 4th as a part of Zorlu PSM Jazz Festival!

Founded in Montreal in 2000 by Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Bruce Cawdron (drums) and Thee Silver Mt. Zion's Beckie Foon (cello), Esmerine released two albums in early 2000s on their own Madrona Records label; If Only A Sweet Surrender To The Nights To Come Be True (2003) and Aurora (2005).

The critical acclaim that the first two albums received with their experimental and visceral take on modern chamber music carried on into the next two; La Lechuza (2011) and Dalmak (2013), both released on Constellation. Dalmak received multiple accolades including a Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year, leading to the fifth album of the band that was released once again on Constellation; Lost Voices (2015), which featured a contribution by Godspeed You! Black Emperor's violinist Sophie Trudeau and was nominated once again for a Juno.

Esmerine's current crew also includes percussionist Jamie Thompson, multi-instrumentalist Brian Sanderson and bassist Jéremi Roy, enabling the band to refer to itself as a chamber rock quintet. They are known to be using lightbox projections by artist/puppeteer Clea Minaker in their live performances to carry their minimalistic style that consists mainly of percussion, cello and marimba forward with a visual touch.

On May 4th, Zorlu PSM will host Esmerine, the Canadian ensemble of minimalist classical and chamber music, as a part of Zorlu PSM Jazz Festival!
